Netflix Streaming Double Feature: “The House of Devil” / “Donnie Darko” …aka: Modern Horror movies based in the eighties!

28 Jul

This week’s netflix streaming double feature consists of two of my favorite modern horror movies: “Donnie Darko” which is based in the eighties, and “The House of the Devil” which goes to great lengths to look like it was shot in the eighties.

1. The House of the Devil

“The House of the Devil” is a breath of fresh air in a horror movie going world polluted with 85% swill. A slow burn in every way, but the grainy film style, spot on ’80’s set design, and great soundtrack are enough to keep you along for the ride. As for a food pairing, ask your favorite pizza delivery restaurant for a pepperoni pizza, and make a special request to have the pepperoni’s laid out like a pentagram!

2. “Donnie Darko”

“Donnie Darko” feels like a sentimental ’80’s era sci-fi Steven Spielberg movie if it was somehow scripted by Charlie Kaufman.  In theory the movie bite’s off way more than it can chew in terms of it’s multidimensional plot line, but what makes this movie great is it’s surreal heightened depiction of the ’80’s (we’re talking multiple “Tears for Fears” montage’s here), and sincerely great and original dialogue. If I’m not selling it to you yet, just watch this:

Cheers Ya’ll
